When several hundred people got together in the southern California city of Yorba Linda to protest a harmless fundraiser hosted by a prominent Muslim group last month, a handful of elected officials were present to give their blessing to the Islamophobic gathering. It didn’t matter to them that the fundraiser, organized by the local chapter of the Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), helped support a local women’s shelter and homeless services. All the protesters saw were a bunch of terrorists. According to the Orange County Register, they harassed Muslim families as they entered the Yorba Linda Community Center, shouting “Go back home!” and asking some of the men if they beat up their wives. There were also the typical chants of “USA! USA!”, that mindless favorite of many right-wing “patriots.”
Instead of condemning this despicably racist behavior, local and national political leaders positively encouraged it. “I’m proud of you,” praised Rep. Gary Miller, a Republican US Congressman. “I’m proud of what you’re doing.” His congressional colleague and fellow Republican Ed Royce said he thought that multiculturalism “has paralyzed too many of our citizens to make the critical judgment we need to make to prosper as a society.”
