LETTER: I'm writing about Friday's (Star-Ledger) editorial, which denounces the people of my town, Bernards Township, for their (our) bigotry in refusing to allow a mosque to be built in town.
I'm sad to say that I agree with every word of this editorial. We have allowed Bernards Township to become the face of bigotry in the United States. I am ashamed of my town and I am ashamed that I am one of the "locals who have stayed silent."
I followed this story and I knew what was happening, and I was too much of a coward to show up at any of the 39 public hearings in which the Islamic Society has had to face "obstacle after obstacle (which was) thrown in their way."
I can only say, now that "the Justice Department is investigating, and the town is facing a federal civil rights lawsuit," that I, too, am "glad the feds got involved." I hope justice prevails and the Islamic Society gets to build their mosque.
And I hope they have an open house when it's done. I will be there.
